FAQs

What conditions will benefit from Chiropractic care?

Worldwide, chiropractic is regarded as an effective option for the treatment of musculoskeletal issues.

The following conditions have strong evidence to suggest that chiropractic will be of benefit:

  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Bursitis
  • Tension headaches
  • Sciatica
  • Rib pain

Although chiropractors make no claims about curing non-musculoskeletal conditions there is evidence that a healthy spine improves overall health.

Can infants and pregnant mothers receive care?

Yes.  Chiropractic is a very safe modality for use in these patients.  The treatment is tailored specifically for the patient and gentle low-force techniques are employed that provide great benefit.

Is Chiropractic safe?

Yes.  Chiropractic is a very safe method of treatment.  Statistics indicate that if anyone is to be injured during the consultation it would be the chiropractor.

Chiropractors are highly trained health professionals who are registered and undertake mandatory ongoing professional training. In their hands, the risk of an injury as the result of treatment is exceedingly low.

How long will it take to get better?

This is a difficult question to answer.  In general, the longer the condition has been there the longer it will take to improve.

Chiropractic aims to correct the underlying issues that are causing the pain so the problem is fixed permanently.

At Southcoast Chiropractic, we customise treatment for the individual patient and vary the techniques to find the most effective approach that works in the least amount of time.

What is the clicking sound?

Connecting the spinal vertebrae are joints that are wrapped in a ligamentous joint capsule that encloses a lubricating fluid.

There is gas dissolved within this fluid.  When your spine is adjusted a slight vacuum is created in the joint that allows the gas to form a gas bubble which gives the resulting ” popping” sound.

This is exactly the same as popping a champagne cork.  The gas then reabsorbs back into the fluid over the next 20 minutes.

Do I need X-rays?

X-rays are not normally needed prior to the commencement of chiropractic therapy but if deemed clinically necessary the chiropractor will write a referral for the appropriate images.

We have a relationship with several radiologists to ensure we get the appropriate views of your spine and plain X-rays will be bulk billed.

Do I need to keep coming back?

Some people believe that once you start chiropractic care you have to keep coming back.  This is totally untrue.  It is like saying once you have visited a dentist you have to keep returning.

Many people find that having experienced the benefits of chiropractic, they want to return periodically for a spinal check and adjustment and others are happy to come in when they have a problem.

The old adage of “prevention is better than a cure” applies here but ultimately the choice is always up to you, the patient.
