What To Expect

What do Chiropractors and Osteopaths do?

Chiropractors and osteopaths assess and treat problems involving the muscles, joints and movement of the body. While each profession has its own approach, both begin by taking the time to understand your symptoms, health history and goals before recommending care.

Your first visit includes a thorough history and physical examination. Depending on your individual needs, this may include postural, orthopaedic, movement and neurological assessments. The aim is to understand what may be contributing to your problem and determine whether chiropractic or osteopathic care is appropriate for you.

Your Assessment

Your chiropractor or osteopath will assess your spine and other relevant areas for changes in movement, joint function, muscle balance, posture and other factors that may be contributing to your symptoms. An osteopathic assessment may also consider how different areas and systems of the body are working together.

In some cases, X-rays or other imaging may be recommended to provide additional information. When imaging is clinically indicated, your practitioner can arrange an appropriate referral. All images are reviewed by a radiologist, and the report and images are forwarded to us.

If your condition is not suitable for chiropractic or osteopathic care, or requires further investigation, your practitioner may recommend that you see your medical practitioner or another appropriate health professional.

Chiropractic and Osteopathic Care

Chiropractic care may involve spinal adjustments and manual manipulation, or gentler techniques using mechanical activator instruments, drop tables or flexion tables. Osteopathic care may include joint mobilisation, soft-tissue techniques, stretching, fascial release, harmonic oscillation, dry needling or manipulation when appropriate.

Whichever approach is recommended, your treatment is tailored to your individual needs, comfort and preferences, with the aim of improving movement and function and helping to manage your symptoms.

Your chiropractor or osteopath may also recommend exercises, movement strategies and lifestyle advice to support your recovery and help you maintain the improvements achieved through care.

Your Care, Your Choice

Following your assessment, your chiropractor or osteopath will explain their findings and discuss the care options that may be appropriate for you.

Some patients choose care focused primarily on managing their current symptoms, while others choose ongoing care to support movement and function. Your care plan can be reviewed and adjusted at any stage based on your needs, preferences and progress.

Our aim is to provide you with clear, accurate, evidence-based information so you can make informed decisions about your health and wellbeing. We will always respect your choices about your care.
